HBT-kultur. American vagabond.

American vagabond (2013) handlar om två hemlösa tonårskillar i Kalifornien. Båda är bögar. Oväntat nog är regissören av filmen en lesbisk kvinna från Finland, Susanna Helke. Hon kommenterar själv varför hon gjorde filmen.

When I was visiting San Francisco for the first time, someone told me that there were shelters intended especially for young lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth living on the streets. The concept puzzled me. Why, in America’s gay Mecca were young queers living in shelters? Years later, I moved to the city after having met my girlfriend. The district we lived in borders the Castro, San Francisco’s celebrated gay neighborhood.... Every day there were grimy and tired young people sitting with their hand-scribbled cardboard signs in front of Starbucks or Walgreen’s. The same doll-faced boy was always at the corner in front of the bank, begging for money with a pink teddy bear tucked under his arm. In this fashionable neighborhood of well-to-do gay men, these shaggy elves were like foul-smelling apparitions.

A survey by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and the National Coalition for Homelessness, published in 2007, revealed the epidemic nature of homelessness among young queers in the United States. Twenty to forty percent of homeless youth living in big cities belong to sexual minorities. The homophobia of family members or foster care parents is the main reason they leave home.... They run away to big cities to seek the support of the gay community.... They have come to their own people in the promised city, but their people do not welcome them cluttering their streets. Particularly not now, as they fervently strive to take their place at the table with “normal” middle-class America.

Den här dokumentären är oftast befriad från sentimentalitet. Men just därför blir den också realistisk och sorglig på allvar. De två killarna skönmålas inte, de tar inte alltid ansvar, är inte bara offer, de stjäl i butiker för att få mat. Men de har också som unga varit med om fruktansvärda attityder från vuxna. Obarmhärtigt avslöjas de sociala klyftor som är betydande i USA, även i det "progressiva" San Fransisco.  Och att det finns förakt emot fattiga också bland en del HBTQ-personer (majoriteten i USA har det ekonomiskt bra). Men det vore alltför lätt för oss i Västeuropa att låtsas som att problem med hemlöshet, fattigdom och utanförskap bara finns "där borta", när vi egentligen vet att det där finns även här. Även om vi har bättre sociala trygghetssystem.
